Imagine a charity that’s like a big, warm koala hug for families when life gets overwhelming. That’s Koala North West – a beacon of hope across Wirral, Cheshire, and Merseyside. In 2025, they proudly celebrated their 25th anniversary.

Born in 2000 as Home-Start Birkenhead from a local community’s cry for help (sparked by a social audit revealing gaps in family support), the charity rebranded in 2020 to spread its wings further. Despite funding storms and cutbacks, they’ve clung on tightly, supporting thousands of families and even braving a chilly New Year’s Day sea dip to raise vital funds.

The Heartwarming Mission: Helping Families Thrive, One Hug at a Time

Koala North West’s superpower is delivering tailored practical and emotional support to children (mostly aged 0–11, with specialist help beyond) and their caregivers. They tackle isolation, boost wellbeing, and help families thrive through home visits, parenting groups, breastfeeding support, SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) services, and intergenerational initiatives like the “Full Circle” group, which connects isolated mums with older members of the community.

What makes them uniquely awesome is their persistence. If they can’t help directly, they actively seek out the right support elsewhere. No family is left behind.

“I bring my granddaughter to the group and it’s just amazing. She gets to play and enjoy stories and singing. I’ve even joined craft days and forest school!” – A Grandma from the Full Circle group

The Heroes Behind the Magic: Volunteers Who Started as Families

Koala North West is powered by 183 incredible volunteers, many of whom are former parents who went on to become staff, alongside a dedicated paid team and 10 trustees. Most staff members began as volunteers, proving that giving back changes lives on both sides.

Recent successes include funding from Cheshire Freemasons for early years projects, reunion events reconnecting past families, and an epic New Year’s Day sea dip that raised over £2,000 despite wind and rain.

Make This Charity Sparkle: Your Support Changes Everything

Mostly grant-funded, Koala North West is always seeking corporate sponsors, individual fundraisers, and community champions. Donations either support specific projects directly or are pooled to create maximum impact where it’s needed most.

Future Dreams: Shining Brighter Than Ever

The next chapter is all about becoming a household name – increasing visibility, accessibility, and reach so even more families across the region can benefit from their support.

Acknowledgement

A special nod to collaborator Katie Stewart, Koala’s Marketing Coordinator. I had the pleasure of meeting Katie to discuss how Vigo IT might support Koala in sharing their message more widely. We met at their head office, where I was truly enamoured by the dedication and enthusiasm she brings to her role. Katie had recently completed the Koala annual report, a glossy, well-constructed booklet that is well worth reading. I also commend all the volunteers who support Koala – your dedication truly shines through.
